SPECTRAL GATES is an instrumental collaboration between Steve Allison (Scruffamudda) & Daniel Arena. Their debut album, released in March 2020, was the product of a single improvised session and traced a line from noisy post-rock to energetic, dubby electro. Lead track 's9c28' received extensive airplay and streaming on Sydney radio and Spotify.

Thwarted by lockdown - the band had played a single show before the venues shut - but energized by the warm support for their first release, Steve and Daniel expanded their DIY home studios and produced three albums worth of new material, planned for separate releases, starting with 'Holocene' scheduled for late 2020.

'system16' was one of the first tracks written in those sessions, and expands the scope of the band through tight, intricate rhythms and dreamy layers of synthetic guitar and keyboard.

The three planned new releases expand and develop the band's doom-math-rave sound through mutant disco, sludgy electronica, electropop and cosmic noise.
